After graduated, Knight enlisted in the Army and served both active duty and reserve. He then pursued further education at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he produced a groundbreaking paper for his small business class, envisioning the potential of Japanese sports shoes in the American market. Knight's ambition was to import high-quality, affordable running shoes from Japan.
During a trip around the world, Knight discovered Tiger brand running shoes in Kobe, Japan. Impressed by their quality and affordability, he secured the distribution rights for Tigers in the western United States. The partnership between Knight and his former track coach, Bill Bowerman, came to fruition when Bowerman not only ordered the Tiger shoes but also offered to become Knight's partner, providing valuable product design ideas. This partnership marked the birth of Blue Ribbon Sports, which eventually became Nike.
Knight's early sales efforts involved selling shoes out of his green Plymouth Valiant automobile at track meets across the Pacific Northwest.
